The Three Letters That Change Everything

The Three Letters That Change Everything

There is something I remind myself of every time I do not want to show up.

Most life-changing moments do not look like opportunities at first. They look like minor inconveniences.

The Disguise

An awkward invite.

A random message.

A chance encounter.

These are the moments that do not feel significant in real time. They feel like disruptions to your routine, small asks that would be easier to decline.

Three Letters

Whether or not they change your life often depends on three little letters: YES.

That is the difference between the path you are on and the one you could be on.

The willingness to show up when it feels inconvenient.

The choice to say yes when saying no would be easier.

This mindset is why I created Outcove, where connections happen through shared experiences.

A Specific Yes

Years ago, I got an invite to an event I had zero interest in attending. Long drive. Didn't know anyone going. Honestly had a dozen better things to do.

I almost said no. Then I remembered the rule: when in doubt, show up.

I went. Sat next to someone I'd never met. We talked for three hours. That conversation became one of the most important relationships of my career.

I almost traded it for a quiet Saturday at home.

What Saying No Actually Costs You

The problem with no is that it's invisible. You never see what you missed.

You just go about your day, maybe a little relieved, and the potential moment evaporates without a trace. There's no counterfactual. No proof of what could have been.

That's what makes no so seductive. It feels safe. But safety isn't neutral. Every no is also a choice to stay exactly where you are.

Is that where you want to be?

Conclusion

The moments that change everything rarely announce themselves. They show up disguised as minor inconveniences, waiting for you to say yes.
